Summer Reading Program

Truckee's annual summer reading program is designed to help kids ages five and up continue to develop their reading skills over the summer months. Participants track the number of hours they read and for each five hours read, come to the library to receive a prize. Participants who read 25 hours receive a grand prize, a gift certificate to the Bookshelf at Hooligian's Rock.

Additionally, special events are held each summer to celebrate the summer reading program. A record 265 children signed up this past summer for the popular program.

Among the exotic animals that visited the library with the Wild Things at this summer's Reading Program were a lemur and an alligator.

Winter Reading Club

A more low-key counterpart to the summer reading program is the Truckee Library's winter reading club. Held from December through February, participants agree to read a specific, self-determined number of books. Once they reach their goal, they receive a book to keep as well as an invitation to an after-hours party at the library, which includes dinner, games, crafts and sometimes even a movie.

To date, 56 children have signed up for the Winter Reading Program, which continues through the end of February. Children ages 5 and up decide on an individual reading goal, between 5 and 25 books. Everyone who meets their goal by the end of the Program will be awarded a free book, and will be invited to a celebratory after-hours party at the Library.
