A New Library to Support our Youth

One Table, Four Chairs

From story time to school readiness, early literacy programs are at the heart of what our library offers—and demand continues to grow. Yet the children’s area regularly reaches capacity, making it difficult for families to fully participate. There’s limited room for educational activities, and no quiet space for focused learning or one-on-one support.

Education doesn’t stop in early childhood. For teens and tweens, the library also plays a vital role—especially for the 36% of TTUSD students considered underserved. But the teen area consists of just one table with four chairs, located in a shared, often noisy space. There’s little room for tutoring, after-school study, or preparing for jobs and scholarships that now require quiet, connected spaces with reliable internet.

With so few resources stretched so thin, we’re limiting access to the very tools that support literacy, learning, and opportunity—for kids of all ages.

Safe Access to a Vital Lifeline

The library is a lifeline for families, offering internet access, learning support, and a safe place to grow. It’s current location on busy Donner Pass Road makes it unsafe and inaccessible for students on foot or bike. The new site in Truckee River Regional Park, directly on the Legacy Trail, will make it safer and easier for young people to use independently.

Growing Needs, Limited Resources

As Truckee’s population rises, more children, teens, and families are turning to the library for essential support—early literacy, education resources, and safe spaces to learn and grow. But the current library is already over capacity. If we don’t act now, we risk leaving more of our youth without the tools they need to succeed.

“I have always loved libraries, and I use the local one, but honestly, it’s not the easiest place for me to get to. I ride my e-bike all the time, but to get to the library, I have to go through many busy intersections and roundabouts, making it not very safe to ride to. The library is also pretty small and old, being built in the ’70s, so I don’t really stick around for long. There really isn’t a place for me to hang out or do my homework.”

— Truckee High School Student, Violet M.

The New Library is Key for Kids and Teens

Truckee’s youth already depend on the library for early literacy, academic support, and safe after-school connection—but the current space can’t keep up. As our population grows, so does the demand for quiet study areas, tutoring, and enrichment programs.

A new library will provide dedicated spaces designed for learning, exploration, and growth—spaces where kids and teens can focus, connect, and thrive. It's not just a building; it’s a vital investment in the education and well-being of the next generation.
