Our Library is Too Small

We Need More Space

  • Over Capacity

With a maximum capacity of just 54, Truckee’s library struggles to meet the needs of over 15,000 cardholders. Space for programs, study, meetings, and community use is severely limited.

  • Growing Population

Originally built to serve 2,000 residents, the Truckee Library now supports a community of over 20,000. As our population continues to grow, the demand for library services is outpacing the capacity of our aging facility.

  • No More Storage

There is no more storage capacity to support a broader collection—while modern libraries often check out tools, toys, and equipment, Truckee’s library simply doesn’t have room to serve our community.

Severely Limited Space Restricts What the Library Can Offer

With a total capacity of just 54 people, Truckee’s library is stretched to its limits. The children’s area regularly exceeds full capacity during story times, making it difficult for families to participate. Only a handful of tables are available for studying, working, or meetings—and because all seating is in open areas, there’s no quiet space or privacy.

Programs are consistently packed, with attendees often limited to standing room only and struggling to hear presenters. When events are happening, noise and crowding disrupt others trying to use the library, limiting everyone’s experience.

Our current space simply cannot keep up with the growing needs of our community. As Truckee’s population and demand increase, these challenges will only intensify—putting even more pressure on a library that’s already severely overburdened.

“I stopped attending mommy and me story hour at the current Truckee library because it was always too crowded.”

A Single Table for All Our Teens

Over the last few years, Friends of the Truckee Library has heard loud and clear from the community: there isn’t a safe, welcoming, and accessible place for our teens and tweens to socialize after school. As screen time increases and digital connections replace face-to-face interaction, our youth need a space to build real relationships and community.

Our current library can’t meet this need. With a total capacity of just 54 people, the teen area offers only one small table with four chairs—far too little for the thousands of young people in Truckee.

Our teens deserve better. They deserve a space that supports their social, educational, and emotional growth.
